UNRA to install replica Clock Tower

Following the completion of the relocation and reconstruction of the iconic Clock Tower at Queen’s Way, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is actively exploring options to ensure the clock is operational. The original monumental tower, which proudly stood tall for around 66 years, was dismantled amidst protests from city residents and heritage advocates to pave the way for the development of the Kampala Flyover Road Project. New Airport terminal launched ahead of NAM conference in Uganda

ENTEBBE. The Uganda Civil Aviation has launched a new terminal ahead of the Non Aligned Movement conference due in Kampala. The new structure now, according to Col. Godfrey Tukamwakira, the project coordinator for the construction works at Entebbe International Airport, has the arrivals and departures terminals, targeting more than a million people in the next few days. “Eventually, we shall keep on upgrading until it gets to 4 million passengers,” says Col Godfrey Tukamwakira. Defence Ministry seeks Shs2.5 billion for EACOP security

PARLIAMENT. Government is seeking Shs2.5 billion to deploy the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) to secure the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). This was revealed by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Vincent Ssempijja who appeared before the Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs on Thursday, 11 January 2024. The EACOP is a pipeline that will transport oil produced from Uganda’s Lake Albert oilfields to the port of Tanga in Tanzania. The pipeline is buried and once topsoil and vegetation have been re-instated, people and animals will be able to cross freely anywhere along its length. “Tanzania is ready; they have budgeted for security of the pipeline but Uganda is not . Katanga murder: Accused daughter Nkwanzi remanded for destroying evidence

KAMPALA: Martha Nkwanzi, a daughter to the late businessman Henry Katanga has been remanded to Luzira prison for allegedly destroying evidence in the murder of her father. Nkwanzi surprisingly surrendered herself to Nakawa Chief Magistrate, Erias Kakooza on Wednesday afternoon. The same court on Monday issued a warrant of arrest against her after she was again a no-show in court. During the court session on Monday, the defence team, represented by McDusman Kabega, along with lawyers; Bruce Musinguzi and Jet Tumwebaze, stated that Nkwanzi is recuperating at Roswell Hospital following a childbirth. No witnesses as Arinaitwe’s sex trafficking case stalls

BY URN A case in which Detective Superintendent of Police Gilbert Arinaitwe Bwana is accused of sexually trafficking his 23-year-old housemaid is on the verge of dismissal due to the absence of state witnesses. Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has given a three-week ultimatum to the Director of Public Prosecutions to produce witnesses in this case or dismiss the case at the next hearing session scheduled for  February 7 for lack of evidence. The ultimatum came after the prosecution led by Judith Nyamwiza informed the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Ronald  Kayizzi that the witnesses were unreachable on their telephone contacts. Doctors want Katanga widow cross-examined from hospital bed

KAMPALA: The government has formed a committee to scrutinize the health condition of Molly Katanga, who stands accused of the murder of her husband, tycoon Henry Katanga. Dr. Henry Mwebesa, the Director General of Health Services in the Ministry of Health, put together a highly specialised committee upon the request of the Directorate (CID). The aim was to assess Molly Katanga's capability to be released from C-Care Hospital, Kampala (IHK) to provide a police statement and subsequently appear in court on 8th January 2024. Besigye attacks Museveni over stolen matooke

KAMPALA: The former leader of the Forum for Democratic Change, Col (Rtd) Dr Kiiza Besigye has attacked President Yoweri Museveni’s government after thieves stole bunches of matooke from his plantation in Wakiso district. “Six large bunches of bananas (Matooke) were stolen from our small Kasangati garden last night!” Besigye posted on his social media handle on X, formerly Twitter. “This is why many people have resorted to sleeping in their gardens- guarding. Police net two soldiers in foiled Kawempe mobile money robbery

KAMPALA: Two soldiers have been arrested following a foiled robbery at a mobile money agent in Kawempe, Kampala. The soldiers had robbed sh600,000 when they run out of luck following a successful interception by police officers.
