MPs grill Entebbe Zoo bosses over sh10b lions’ share

KAMPALA: Members of Parliament on the Tourism Committee have tasked officials from Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) with providing a breakdown for the Shs10b requested for lion breeding. The legislators said Tuesday they wouldn't accept 'landing themselves in problems' by trying to defend an exorbitant figure they know nothing about. The MPs expressed worry that the high figure might be used to buy lions which might not even give birth. They further said a private breeder in Butambala was keeping more lions at a lower cost compared to the figure quoted by UWEC. Court sets date for trial of Katanga murder case

BY URN. KAMPALA. High Court Criminal Division Judge Isaac Muwata has set July 2nd, 2024, as the trial commencement date for businesswoman Molly Katanga and her two daughters, accused of the murder of businessman Henry Katanga.  The decision follows a planning meeting involving the judge, Katanga’s legal team, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). According to the prosecution, Henry Katanga was fatally shot by his wife, Molly, on November 2nd, 2023, at their residence in Kampala.  The prosecution alleges Molly’s daughters tampered with crucial evidence, and two others are charged as accessories after the murder. While granted bail, Molly remains in remand at Luzira Women’s Prison, pending a bail hearing on April 3rd, 2024.  In her application, Molly asserts her innocence, citing medical concerns and family responsibilities, and proposes prominent figures as sureties. South Sudanese officials rally Ugandan media to boost economic development

JUBA: A team of South Sudanese officials have rallied Ugandan media houses to promote the country as one of the best investment destinations in the region. Senior government officials from the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Uganda embarked on an initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to promote South Sudan’s visibility in trade and economic development within the region. High Court acquits suspects in Gen Katumba Wamala attempted murder case

KAMPALA: Yusuf Nyanzi, the primary suspect in the attempted murder of Gen Katumba Wamala in June 2021, has been cleared of charges by the High Court. Nyanzi, who has spent time in Luzira prison over eight years and is involved in three separate high-profile murder cases, including those of Maj Muhammad Kiggundu and former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, was released alongside Hussein Sserubula due to insufficient evidence linking them to terrorism charges and the murder of Katumba's daughter and driver, as well as the attempted murder of Katumba himself. However, charges including murder, attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated robbery, and affiliation with a terrorist organization have been confirmed against six other accused individuals by the same court. Tragic incident: Ugandan Doctor’s dog kills infant

WAKISO. In a heartbreaking incident reported by the police, a baby boy lost his life on Monday after being attacked by a dog inside the home of Dr. Andrew Obuku, a former president of the Ugandan doctor's association. The tragic event occurred around 10 am at Dr. Obuku's residence in Canaan Estate, Mawugulu cell, Katabi town council, Wakiso district. The dog, belonging to Dr. Obuku, managed to escape from its kennel and viciously attacked the infant, resulting in fatal injuries. The baby, under the care of a newly recruited caretaker named Nuwarinda Sharon, was placed on the veranda while Sharon attended to household chores. Sharon recounted her desperate attempt to intervene as she witnessed the dog approaching the child. Breaking News: NRM CEC hunt for Among replacement as impeachment looms

NRM village registrars protest over shs10,000 daily allowance

Village registrars taking part in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) membership register update have protested over the sh10,000 they are given daily, claiming the money is too little yet billions of shillings were released for the exercise. In Kampala, the registrars raised alarm on one of their whatsapp groups saying “bosses” are eating all the money….nebatuwa obutwalo without lunch!” Another one called Ritah said: “We are doing excellent work on top of creating enmity and they are giving us peanuts”. UNOC defends appointment of Muhwezi daughter as COO

KAMPALA: The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has explained that the recruitment of city lawyer, Samantha Muhwezi, as their Chief Operations Officer went through a legal process. Daily Secrets has learnt that despite reports that the board was removed by President Yoweri Museveni over the illegal recruitment of Muhwezi, UNOC says she did not pass through the back door. Samantha is daughter of Jim Muhwezi, the minister for security. The mother, Suzan Muhwezi, heads the controversial AGOA project. “The Board of Directors at UNOC has not been removed by President Museveni or any other authority,” said UNOC in a statement.  UNOC explained that the laws only allow the board to superintend for only terms and that was the reason the President appointed a new board. Kumi rebel Christians block Archbishop Kaziimba from accessing church

A section of Christians in Kumi district blocked Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba from entering St. James Church grounds. Trouble begun Tuesday when Kumi Bishop Mike Esakhan called a break-away faction wasps during Kaziimba's ongoing tour of the diocese to reclaim properties lost to Reformed Anglican Church. Not even police could stop the angry congregation, which broke away from the main Anglican Church after their choice for bishop, Rev Charles Okunya, was denied the chair by both court and House of Bishops. The aggrieved community had taken over a number church property in Kumi.
