NUP leader Kyagulanyi explains tough stand on Mpuuga

Masaka NUP leaders slam party President over Mpuuga’s service award

MASAKA. The National Unity Platform-NUP leaders in Masaka have lashed out at the top leadership of their party over its demand for the resignation of MP Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba from the position of parliamentary Commissioner. The NUP secretariat released a statement on Thursday evening, calling for Mpuuga’s immediate resignation. The party accused him of being culpable of corruption and abuse of office when he accepted a Service Award of 500 million Shillings from the Parliamentary Commission. Kadamas in trouble as BoU suspends operations of Pivot Payments company

Bank of Uganda has suspended operations of Pivot Payments, a company that deals in remittances of money from banks to wallet as well as between the Middle East and Uganda. In a Thursday communication, the central bank said the decision was taking after finding out that Pivot was "conducting business in a manner that is detrimental to the best interest on the public and endangers the stability of the financial system." BoU advised wallet holders at the company to verify their balances. "In exercise of its powers under section 13 of the National Payment Systems Act, 2020, the Bank of Uganda has effective today February 29, 2024, suspended the licences of M/S Pivot Payments Limited as a Payment Service Provider and a Payment Systems Operator," BoU noted. Two jailed over theft of PDM cash in Sironko

Two people have been sent to prison over theft of PDM cash meant for beneficiaries in Sironko district. The Anti-Corruption Unit of State House said the Busita Sub-County LC3 Chairperson Mukota Patrick Benerd and a one Nambozo Hellen were remanded until next month. Suspected land grabber on the run over illegal possession of gun

Wakiso-based property broker Kenneth Keeya is on police's wanted after reportedly trying to grab land using an illegal gun. Trouble started when Keeya together with another suspected land grabber only identified as Gaddafi descended on a disputed piece of wetland at Kalidubi in Makindye Ssabagabo and tried to grab it forcibly.Police was quick to swing into action, arresting Gaddafi while Keeya managed to escape. East African Court of Justice fixes date for EACOP project appeal

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) has asked activist groups to file a written submission in an appeal seeking to overturn a ruling that sought to block the construction of the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project. The regional court sitting in Arusha in November 2023 threw out a case in which activists including the African Centre for Energy Governance (AFIEGO) had filed against the pipeline project that is running between Uganda and Tanzania. The court then ruled that it had no jurisdiction to hear the case by AFIEGO and others because it was filed too late or out of time. But AFEIGO, Center for Food and Adequate Living Rights (CEFROHT)-Uganda, Natural Justice (NJ)-Kenya, and Centre for Strategic Litigation (CSL)-Tanzania, appealed against the ruling in a case they had filed in November 2020.
