UNOC defends appointment of Muhwezi daughter as COO

KAMPALA: The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has explained that the recruitment of city lawyer, Samantha Muhwezi, as their Chief Operations Officer went through a legal process. Daily Secrets has learnt that despite reports that the board was removed by President Yoweri Museveni over the illegal recruitment of Muhwezi, UNOC says she did not pass through the back door. Samantha is daughter of Jim Muhwezi, the minister for security. The mother, Suzan Muhwezi, heads the controversial AGOA project. “The Board of Directors at UNOC has not been removed by President Museveni or any other authority,” said UNOC in a statement.  UNOC explained that the laws only allow the board to superintend for only terms and that was the reason the President appointed a new board. Kadamas in trouble as BoU suspends operations of Pivot Payments company

Bank of Uganda has suspended operations of Pivot Payments, a company that deals in remittances of money from banks to wallet as well as between the Middle East and Uganda. In a Thursday communication, the central bank said the decision was taking after finding out that Pivot was "conducting business in a manner that is detrimental to the best interest on the public and endangers the stability of the financial system." BoU advised wallet holders at the company to verify their balances. "In exercise of its powers under section 13 of the National Payment Systems Act, 2020, the Bank of Uganda has effective today February 29, 2024, suspended the licences of M/S Pivot Payments Limited as a Payment Service Provider and a Payment Systems Operator," BoU noted. Suspected land grabber on the run over illegal possession of gun

Wakiso-based property broker Kenneth Keeya is on police's wanted after reportedly trying to grab land using an illegal gun. Trouble started when Keeya together with another suspected land grabber only identified as Gaddafi descended on a disputed piece of wetland at Kalidubi in Makindye Ssabagabo and tried to grab it forcibly.Police was quick to swing into action, arresting Gaddafi while Keeya managed to escape. Tayebwa vows to engage EU on unfair trade restrictions after being elected to bureau of OACPS

LUANDA, ANGOLA— Uganda's Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has been elected member of the bureau to represent East Africa to the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) - European Union General Assembly.  Tayebwa was elected during the 64th session of the OACPS Parliamentary. Assembly and Constitutive Sessions of the OACPS-EU Joint Parliamentary Assemblies happening in Luanda, Angola, between 17 – 21. More than 500 Entebbe families face eviction

More than 500 families living on a piece of land located in Manyago Housing Estate in Manyago village in Katabi Town Council, Entebbe Municipality in Wakiso district say they are living in fear and risk being evicted after their land was leased out to a third party without their consent. The families, while addressing a press conference on Thursday through their lawyers led by Stanley Okecho from GEM Advocates, said that the occupants earlier petitioned Court. They then entered into a Consent Judgement that stated that the  sitting tenants be given priority when the Entebbe Municipal Council is leasing out the 15 acre land. Ugandans lose appetite for passports

BY URN KAMPALA. The ministry of Internal Affairs has reported a significant drop in the number of applicants for Ugandan passports. Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi said the Covid-19 pandemic saw an increase in the number of Ugandans applying for passports, prompting them to upgrade their system, in anticipation of an increased number of applications. “We anticipated big numbers to go above 3,000 passport applications per day but, to our surprise, the number has reduced to less than 1,000 applicants per day,” Mundeyi said.According to the ministry, express passport applications are now disposed of in two days with applicants receiving their passports while ordinary passport applicants get theirs in 10 working days.“If you apply for an express passport, you will be given an appointment in the next 30 minutes," Mundeyi said. Uganda Airlines hunts for more pilots in a bid to fight delays, cancellations

KAMPALA: Uganda Airlines is hunting for more than 20 pilots and First Officers in a bid to close flight cancellation and delay gaps that have rocked the national carrier since December. David Kaweesa, the Uganda Airlines head of flight operations, told media at the weekend the company was short of cabin crew and efforts were underway to fill the vacuume. He said out of the 24 required pilots and flight officers, the airline only has 13 of each. "So we have to fill this shortage. Getting a pilot from interview time to operational takes us five months. Kiryandongo leaders throw out CMD Investments for messing sh3.5b project

Kiryandongo District leaders have vowed to decline CMD Investments Limited a company which was contracted to construct the 3.36 billion Kigumba seed secondary school on future projects. The leaders cite inconsistency and failure to adhere to the contract terms evidenced during the construction of both Kitwara and Kigumba seed secondary schools by the same contractor. The leaders made the vow during the site meeting held on January 18,2024 at Kiryandongo District headquarters to discuss the fate of the stalled Kigumba Seed Secondary school. Black Monday: One killed, property worth billions destroyed in city fire

KAMPALA: One person has been confirmed dead while property worth billions of shillings was destroyed when fire broke out at City House on Luwum Street in the heart of Kampala. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, said the cause of the 8am fire could not be readily established. Police deployed several fire fighting trucks to try and put out the fire as traders looked on in shock, with no hope in sight.
