Prisons suspend visits, parties and leave ahead of Christmas

KAMPALA: The Uganda Prisons Services have visits, parties and leave among other measures aimed at curbing any form of terrorism and prison break ahead of the festive season. Commissioner of Prisons Johnson Byabashaija announced the raft of measures in his Friday communication to commanders. He asked the officers to strengthen prison security, intelligence and coordination with other security agencies. “Hired prisoner services (Kibarua) is suspended. Terrorist who planted recent bombs in Kampala flees to Congo

WASTAGE: MPs to pocket sh2.7m per day for sports

KAMPALA: MPs who will represent Uganda at the East African Games in Rwanda will be paid $720 (about sh2.7m) as per diem. This was revealed by Speaker Anita Among during plenary on Wednesday. Close to 200 MPs and parliamentary staff will be travelling to Kigali to take part in the regional games with counterparts from other East African Community countries. Uganda police stakes sh20m for terrorists behind city bombs

KAMPALA: Uganda’s joint security forces have placed a sh20m stake for whoever will provide information leading to the arrest of two suspects behind the two explosives, which went off in different parts of Kampala at the weekend. The Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force of CMI, ISO, CT and CI have put up a serious manhunt for two notorious ADF suspects, for their alleged roles in a series of terror attacks. Kenyan national killed in Kabale accident en-route to Rwanda

KAMPALA: A Kenyan national was on Friday killed in a road accident as he drove manure to Rwanda. Police said, the accident occurred at Kyanamira trading centre, Kyanamira sub-county, Kabale district, along the Kabale-Mbarara highway. The deceased has been identified as Ramadhan Hussein, 49, who was driving trailer number KDM 588E /ZE3608 white and grey in colour Mercedes Benz. “It's alleged that a trailer which was being driven by one Ramadhan Hussein now the deceased from Kenya heading to Rwanda which was carrying manure,” the police said. “When it reached at Kyanamira trading centre, the driver failed to negotiate the corner and the vehicle overturned hence, he died instantly,” Police added. Uganda records at least 200,000 deaths as a result of accidents annually, according to police reports.

Museveni ex-minister Nyombi Thembo bounces back as UCC boss

KAMPALA: The former minister of state for ICT, George William Nyombi Thembo, has bounced back to the limelight after being appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Former railways boss charged with forgery

KAMPALA: The former Managing Director of Uganda Railways Corporation, Stanley Sendegeya, has been remanded on charges of forgery and uttering false documents. According to court documents, Sendegeya forged and presented fake documents before getting the railways’ topmost job. Sendegeya was arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court and the charges read to him. Natasha Mariam, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit spokesperson, said Sendegeya was netted in an operation by the unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Uganda Police (CID) on November 22. “Sendegeya is accused of forging and presenting documents proving that he had the requisite academic qualifications for the position of managing director, which he did not,” Mariam said. New Bill wants bars opened at 5-10pm

KAMPALA: Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi has finally tabled her proposed Bill, which suggests that bars should only open between 5-10pm on weekdays. The Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill 2023, proposes a jail term of 10 years or fine of shs20m for anyone found selling alcoholic drinks before 5pm and beyond 10pm on working days. Opendi also wants the ban of employment of people below 18 in premises where alcoholic drinks are manufactured, sold, stored or consumed. She has proposed a fine not exceeding sh20m or imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years, or both.

Arua PDM boss remanded over extortion

KAMPALA: A chairperson of the Parish Development Model in Arua City has been charged with extortion through selling of fake copies of PDM constitution. The Anti-Corruption Unit of State House together with police investigators arrested and arraigned Edoni Bernard, the Chairperson PDM of Pangisa ward in Arua City on allegations of extortion. It is alleged Edoni sold fake copies of the PDM Constitution to the 50 groups of associations under Pangisa ward. In July 2023, Edoni and others still at large, at Ojulua Cell in Arua City convened a meeting with the 50 PDM associations in Pangisa Ward in Arua City and demanded each group to pay sh15,000 allegedly for the purchase of PDM constitutions.
