Ministry calls for more bicycles given to health workers to save rural lives

KAMPALA: Through enabling community health workers (CHEWS) with bicycles, more rural lives could be saved, Dr Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary at the ministry of health has said. Atwine said the government had already trained at least 3,000 CHEWS countrywide, with only 331 in Mayuge and Lira in possession of bicycles donated by World Bicycle Relief and Buffalo Bicycle. “The bicycle is more relevant now because we are talking about integration of services. So that when the CHEW goes to a household, she does not just talk about HIV and adherence to ARVs, but she is talking about the whole continuum of care,” Atwine said. “If she finds a pregnant woman, we want to know whether that woman has received malaria prevention therapy, chemo-prophylactic treatment, has attended antenatal care.” She said the bicycles would be more important “because when you […]

Religion: An institution used by dictatorship to massage despotism

By RICHARD KIZZA LUGOBWA LONDON: Religion and politics have since time immemorial been intertwined institutions as both thrive on systems of beliefs, values and practices which shape people’s lives and attitude, and guide collective action. Molarity takes center stage in religious teachings which as well is one of the strongest pillars in politics. Religious ideologies shape political movements, religious leaders influence political decisions, and political actors often use religious rhetoric to amass support which aids their firm grip to power. Mahatma Gandhi once said that “those who believe religion and politics aren't connected don't understand either”. Uganda’s case has not been any different. Since independence, politicians have explicitly showed inclination to religious factions directly or indirectly as a way to capture and keep power. Napoleon Bonaparte was once quoted saying, “Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet”. However, […]

By James Kabengwa KAMPALA.The Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has stirred fresh controversy following a series of provocative social media posts targeting European Union and the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC). The uproar began Thursday after Muhoozi shared a photo of National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine engaging with European Union (EU) diplomats who visited Kavule this week.  “This is an Abomination! @EUinUG is really playing with fire. Sawa!”  Muhoozi shared on his verified X handle a post that has widely been viewed as a warning to the EU for its interaction with the opposition. In a second tweet, Muhoozi lashed out at the UHRC for writing him a letter, saying on May 2 in which they reminded him to free Bobi Wine’s Body guard Edward Ssebuwuufu aka Eddie […]

Reclaiming Borders – A Turning Point in Britain’s Immigration Policy

By Our Guest Writer London. Monday marked a defining moment in the UK’s immigration narrative with the publication of a new White Paper that the current government claims will deliver on a long-standing promise: to “take back control” of Britain's borders. Framed as both a moral imperative and a practical necessity, the strategy is positioned as a clean break from what is described as years of dysfunction and betrayal under the previous government. The central message is unmistakable—immigration must be reduced, and the system must be reoriented to serve the national interest. The Prime Minister doesn’t just outline a shift in policy; he indicts the past administration for failing spectacularly to match action with rhetoric. Between 2019 and 2023, he points out, net migration skyrocketed to nearly one million—an increase so stark that it has come to symbolize the disconnect […]

Gen Muhoozi’s recklessness likely to lead Uganda into crisis

BY RICHARD KIZZA LUGOBWA LONDON. The Uganda’s army chief who also is the president’s son has for a long time been an X  mania continuously making controversial posts and commentary increasing tension among citizens. Then unapologetic General (nicknamed the tweeting General) uses sarcasm and seemingly lighthearted statements to communicate to the public his support to the current regime and readiness to “crush” opposition. General Muhoozi speaks with great authority which has raised questions as to whether his father, General Museveni is still in charge of the country’s security. Notable among Gen Muhoozi’s posts was a response to the parliamentary committee which summoned him with regard to his behavior on social media, early this year. The Defense and Internal Affairs committee wanted Muhoozi to explain his involvement in partisan politics following a series of social media posts which the constitution forbids […]

Is Gen Muhoozi’s Behaviour and Posts Cultivating Genocide?

By James Kabengwa In recent weeks, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba—Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni—has used social media not only to escalate political tensions, but to openly mock the abduction and alleged torture of opposition bodyguard Eddie Mutwe. What may appear to some as flippant or provocative tweets are, in truth, deeply disturbing signals of state impunity, tribal dominance, and a creeping culture of dehumanization—warning signs eerily familiar to any student of genocidal regimes. When Muhoozi tweeted, “He is in my basement. Learning Runyankore. You are next!” he didn’t just admit to extrajudicial detention—he invoked a colonial-style conversion ritual, where the captive must absorb the language and culture of his oppressor. The statement drew immediate alarm, and rightly so. Forcing Eddie Mutwe, a Muganda and a bodyguard to Robert Kyagulanyi SSentamu aka Bobi Wine, the National […]
