Museveni using corruption as form of repression

By Richard Kizza Lugobwa The recent controversy surrounding the alleged Shs 100m bribe given to legislators has brought to light the deep-seated corruption in Uganda's parliament. The money, reportedly given out by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Among, was intended to thank legislators for passing the coffee bill and as an advance payment for the UPDF amendment act. The opposition leader, Hon Joel Senyonyi, released a video showing NRM legislators sneaking into parliament at night to collect the bribe, sparking widespread criticism and public outrage. The controversy highlights the extent to which corruption has permeated Uganda's parliament, with legislators more interested in serving their personal interests than those of their constituents. This is not the first time President Museveni has used bribes to achieve his objectives. In 2017, MPs were given Shs 200m to scrap the presidential age […]

Lands commissioner punched, attacked with panga over unfair title cancellation

A lands commissioner at the line ministry survived death twice in a space of one month for reportedly cancelling genuine land titles in favour of wealthy individuals. Reports from the commissioner's office indicate that the first attack happened last month when a furious man entered the office, locked the door and punched the corrupt man severally. The officer managed to yell for help before policemen broke in and saved him from his tormentor. The second incident happened last week when an angry man travelled all the way from Bunyoro with a machete in a jacket (in the late Tamale Mirundi style). "What saved the commissioner was simply that he had been summoned for grilling by Afande Magambo of CID over other dubious deals," our source said. "The man with the panga waited for his target in vain before revealing to […]

Nalukoola delayed gazette Sparks Outcry, Swearing-In Blocked

KAMPALA. Ugandan lawmakers have condemned the Electoral Commission (EC) for withholding the official gazettement of Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola, the National Unity Platform (NUP) victor of the Kawempe North by-election, delaying his parliamentary swearing-in. During a Thursday plenary session chaired by Speaker Anita Among, Kira MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda highlighted the inconsistency, contrasting Nalukoola’s unresolved status with Igara East MP Michael Mawanda’s swift inauguration within 24 hours of his win. Speaker Among clarified procedural constraints, stating Parliament cannot swear in members without the EC’s gazette, a document she emphasized was still pending. Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi rebuked the EC’s delay as unprecedented, revealing the Commission cited “internal issues” as justification despite prior elections adhering to prompt timelines. He accused the EC of abandoning its mandate post-results declaration and demanded transparency from the government, which oversees the body. The debate expanded to […]

Uganda’s Press Freedom Crumbles Amid Electoral Repression

By James Kabengwa Kampala, Uganda. As Kawempe North parliamentary by-election descended into chaos, Thursday, the arrests of two opposition lawmakers and multiple journalists—paired with a shocking military crackdown—have laid bare the escalating dangers faced by media workers. The decision by Nation Media Group Uganda to withdraw Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda journalists from covering the polls, citing targeted attacks by soldiers and plainclothes agents, underscores a grim reality:  journalism has become a life-threatening act of defiance. Daniel Kalinaki, the Nation Media group’s General Manager, framed the withdrawal as a reluctant survival tactic in a message posted on X. “Our teams are being hunted, their equipment destroyed, and their lives endangered simply for documenting the truth,” he said. This retreat marks an ugly situation revealing how far the state will go to silence scrutiny during pivotal political moments. The Kawempe North […]
