Stop EACOP funding until human rights abuse on LGBT and PAPs is sorted

BY JAMES KABENGWA OPINION: The latest information from Uganda indicates that civil works for the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) have since commenced amidst lobbying for funding for the same project. Even as the civil works start, gross violation of human rights in this east African country continues unabated. The once treasured Pearl of Africa has since turned into the deepest grave of Africa when it comes to trampling on human rights. Take the case of LGBTs who are currently living one day at a time given that a horrendous law was passed to eliminate gays from a country under led by despot Yoweri Museveni. Once convicted of aggravated homosexuality, the victims are either sent to jail for life or sent to the gallows. Just recently, organisers of a gay party were hunted down by a […]

Monitor, the enemy paper: Spare the ROAD and spoil the child

OPINION: In Uganda, the ‘thing becomes legal when he wishes it’. On that note, the Monitor has become a bad paper, an enemy paper because of the constant and consistent reminders by President Museveni. Since the King has said the paper is bad and may be wishes it so, the high priests, and altar boys and girls followed suit in baptizing the media house all manners of negative, horrific, traumatising and dehumanising names. But, have you visited the media house’s headquarters in Industrial Area, Namuwongo, Kampala City? OMG! It takes lots of courage for one to maneuver the many potholes (ponds, pools and lakes for now) on Eighth Street. For years and years, that road has been one of the worst in the entire city. Whether it is be design, choice or curse, our friends at MPL and their neighbouring […]

Rest in peace Fr Lawrence Yawe Mudduse

By Elvis Kintu Nsonyi I don’t have the right words in my diction to eulogize Fr. Lawrence Yawe Mudduse. We last talked a day before his death! It has always remained hard for me to get the true definition of life. I am heartbroken. I am sad. I can’t believe that my friend and uncle Rev. Fr. Lawrence Yawe is no more. It is mind-boggling indeed. I pity whoever has known him after his demise, you don’t know what you missed! My last memories with him were the previous two days. On Saturday, he had just celebrated mass at Kitovu Cathedral. We joked and made fun out of his classmate Master Patrick Ssenfuka. I told him he was my Physics teacher who played his role only that I thrived to the passway in other fields, but not Sciences. With the […]

Grasshoppers are finally here, mind your safety, lest you fall

By Elvis Kintu Nsonyi I have seen a disturbing video of dead grasshoppers, trending on social media. Apparently, someone used pesticides to trap this delicacy. Really? Why in the world would someone even think about such a callous act? When did we, Ugandans get here? What happened to humaneness? Are you not duty bound to protect your customers? From a business perspective, I understand the troubles of getting the business numbers right in such a punctured economy. And most especially when many of these men and women trying to make ends meet can only rely on quite costly credit from banks and unscrupulous money lending sharks with conditional linear and exponential interests. I know! Trust me, I know a little about this. But, we can surely try to be creative about how to maximise yields without putting your clients' life […]
