UIA boss Mukiza, others told to cough shs500m in honoraria awards

KAMPALA: The Director General of Uganda Investment Authority, Dr Robert Mukiza, and several other staff have been ordered to refund at least shs545m that the group awarded themselves as honoraria payment. According to sources, the man was paid off the loan-funded Kampala Industrial Park Development project. The directive was issued by UIA board chairman, Morrison Rwakakamba under the orders of privatization state minister Evelyn Anite. The directive indicates that Mukiza had received shs82m while his deputy, Robert Kyalimpa pocketed shs58m on July 23, 2023. The minister wanted the money refunded in 24 hours but it is not clear whether the officials have since returned it since the directive came on June 12. Former district boss jailed for stealing wreckage of govt car

KAMPALA: A former district chairperson will spend almost two years in jail after being convicted of theft of a wrecked government vehicle. “This morning, the Grade One Magistrates' Court in Matuga has convicted and sentenced the former Amudat district LC5 Chairperson, Francis Kiyonga Adamson, to 23 months and 14 days in jail and a fine of UGX 80M to be paid to Amudat district within six months of completing his sentence,” Anti-Corruption Unit of State House noted. Kiyonga was charged in 2021 with stealing and selling spare parts of a government vehicle, a double cabin pick-up truck registration number UG 0654, belonging to the Amudat District under the Youth Livelihood Programme. He stole it from Matugga Police Station and sold it in parts.

BREAKING: Aircraft carrying Malawi’s VP goes missing

An aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing, a statement from the president's office has said. The Malawi Defense Force aircraft "went off the radar" after it left the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning, it added. The president ordered a search and rescue operation after aviation officials were unable to contact the aircraft, according to the BBC report. It was supposed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, in the country’s north, just after 10:00 local time (11:00 BST). Govt names, warns car bonds harboring illegal immigrants

The government has named leading car bonds behind the employment of illegal aliens following an operation in which more than 80 mainly Pakistanis and Indians were arrested. The Internal Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi, revealed that Future Group, Chatha Motors, Jumbo Motors and Lakhani were some of the leading car dealers who employ workers without permits. “Our enforcement team has arrested 38 irregular immigrants. Police dog tracks down Namisindwa chairperson in Shs 10m robbery

NAMISINDWA. Police in Namisindwa are actively seeking the LC I chairperson of Bubutu TC cell, accusing them of masterminding the theft of Shs 10 million. Allegedly, Fred Masika led a group of armed individuals in a raid on Kibeti Mutuma's shop, where they took Shs 7 million, and also targeted Paulo Manawa's shop, stealing Shs 3 million. During a search on Friday, police, accompanied by a sniffer dog, traced Masika's residence but found it empty. Civil society group fails to block sh1.4 trillion for Lubowa Hospital

The Constitutional Court in Kampala has dismissed a petition in which Civil Society Organization Initiative for Social Economic Rights (ISER) wanted to stop a parliamentary resolution to guarantee sh1.4 trillion to an Italian Investor for construction of an ultra-modern Hospital in Lubowa. In a unanimous decision, the Constitutional Court of Justices Fredrick Egonda-Ntende, Catherine Bamugemereire, Irene Mulyagonja, Monica Mugenyi, and Oscar Kihika threw out the petition. The Justices have dismissed the petition against the Attorney General on grounds that Parliament passed a resolution after the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance had entered into the Direct Agreement for the financing of the loan in issue and therefore it did not come into operation until the resolution was passed, as is required by Article 159 (5) of the Constitution. Ugandan MP escapes death in deadly land dispute.

A Ugandan Member of Parliament representing Buhweju survived death in a bitter land fight in which seven other people including a Vision Group reporter were injured. Accounts of the incident differ. According to Deo Atuhaire Omuhatizi, the LCV Chairperson of Buhweju District, Mwijukye was assaulted by a group of land usurpers in Rwanyamabare Nyakishana sub-county before being struck by stones and harmed.
