More than 500 Entebbe families face eviction

More than 500 families living on a piece of land located in Manyago Housing Estate in Manyago village in Katabi Town Council, Entebbe Municipality in Wakiso district say they are living in fear and risk being evicted after their land was leased out to a third party without their consent. The families, while addressing a press conference on Thursday through their lawyers led by Stanley Okecho from GEM Advocates, said that the occupants earlier petitioned Court. They then entered into a Consent Judgement that stated that the  sitting tenants be given priority when the Entebbe Municipal Council is leasing out the 15 acre land. UBOS sets guidelines for census enumerators as it goes digital

The Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has revealed that only people with smartphones and mobile money numbers registered in their names will be recruited to enumerate in the national population census. Uganda is set to carry out its 6th national population census on the night of the 9th leading to May 10th, 2024. More than 120,000 enumerators will be recruited. Giving an update on the preparedness for the exercise on Thursday, Chris Mukiza, the UBOS Executive Director, said that the census will be digitized, including payments of the enumerators to avoid costs of middlemen. “All the people we are going to work with must have mobile money numbers registered in their names not those of their relatives, friends, or neighbors. Ugandans lose appetite for passports

BY URN KAMPALA. The ministry of Internal Affairs has reported a significant drop in the number of applicants for Ugandan passports. Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi said the Covid-19 pandemic saw an increase in the number of Ugandans applying for passports, prompting them to upgrade their system, in anticipation of an increased number of applications. “We anticipated big numbers to go above 3,000 passport applications per day but, to our surprise, the number has reduced to less than 1,000 applicants per day,” Mundeyi said.According to the ministry, express passport applications are now disposed of in two days with applicants receiving their passports while ordinary passport applicants get theirs in 10 working days.“If you apply for an express passport, you will be given an appointment in the next 30 minutes," Mundeyi said. AU condemns use of children in armed conflicts in Africa

BY Xinhua The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned the recruitment and use of children in armed conflicts in Africa and called for an end to such practices. The call was made in line with the International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers, which is annually commemorated on Feb. 12. I had grown wary of our mission and sought to understand the experience of similar missions elsewhere. That is how I came to read The Afghanistan Papers, an insightful book by Craig Whitlock. Whitlock’s book found me thinking about how futile UPDF’s mission in Somalia is. I have visited Somalia thrice and been impressed by the performance of our troops. Ugandan Justice Sebutinde elected vice president of ICJ

KAMPALA: Ugandan Justice Julia Sebutinde has been elected as vice president of the UN-backed International Court of Justice (ICJ). This was announced in a Tuesday press release by the ICJ, exciting millions of Ugandans. "Judge Julia Sebutinde (Uganda) was today elected Vice-President of the International Court of Justice by her peers, for a term of three years," ICJ announced. "Vice-President Sebutinde has been a Member of the Court since 6 February 2012. Before joining the Court, Vice-President Sebutinde was a judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone from2005 to 2011." Controversial lawyer Male Mabirizi has vowed to defy police summons requiring him to appear before the criminal investigations department (CID) over his recent bigamy case against Busoga king William Nadiope.
