Alleged gold scammer remanded

KAMPALA. A Ugandan businessman, Kizito Dalton Lawrence, has been arraigned before the KCCA Grade 1 Magistrates' Court for allegedly swindling an American investor out of $105,000. Lawrence, who was charged with obtaining money by false pretense and conspiracy to defraud, claimed to supply 20 kilograms of pure gold, which turned out to be a scam.  The alleged crime took place between February and June 2024, with Lawrence working with others still at large. The State House Anti-Graft Squad headed by Brig Henry Isoke in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), brought Lawrence to justice. List: Uganda, 35 countries Face US Travel ban

WASHINGTON. The US government is considering imposing travel restrictions on Uganda, along with 35 other countries, according to a State Department memo. The countries have 60 days to meet new requirements, including providing reliable identity documents and reducing visa term violations. If the countries fail to comply, they may face visa restrictions, travel bans, or other limitations. The memo suggests that countries willing to accept third-country nationals being removed from the US may face fewer restrictions. The potential travel restrictions are part of the Trump administration's efforts to strengthen border security and ensure American safety. The list of affected countries includes 25 African nations, with Uganda being one of them. BREAKING: Govt suspends new harsh traffic rules

Following public uproar, the government has suspended the latest traffic regulations that saw hundreds of motorists fined millions of shillings. The new rules dictated strict adherence to low speed limits up to 30km/h in urban settings while restricting drivers to less than 100km/h on expressway and dual carriages. Highways were restricted to less than 70km/h, angering motorists. Below is full statement by works ministry. District Officials Jailed for Corruption

IBANDA. Two former Ibanda District officials have been sentenced to 18 months in prison for selling government land. Matsiko Mutwingire Abert, former Chief Administrative Officer, and Nuwagira Tom, former District Natural Resources Officer, were convicted of abuse of office. They granted 13 hectares of Ibanda Forest Reserve to a cooperative society without authorization. The Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court ordered them to pay UGX 10,470,000 each in compensation to Ibanda District for the financial loss incurred in recovering the land.

Lawyer Drake Twebaze remanded over shs1.9b fraud

Court yesterday remanded lawyer Drake Twebaze to Luzira Prisons over a case of fraud involving shs1.9b. According to the Anti-Corruption Unit of State House, Twebaze appeared before Buganda Road Magistrate's Court on various charges, including; obtaining money by false pretenses, conspiracy to defraud, and forgery. He was remanded until June 13, 2025. Court documents indicate that between September and December 2022, in Kampala City, the accused together with others allegedly obtained $553,500 from Talib Antonio McDowell of KG Unlimited LLC, Florida, USA, by falsely claiming that the money was necessary as a statutory compliance fee for pre-qualification to participate in a single-source bidding process for supplying a water plant to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries, and Fisheries, whereas not. Security personnel protest as commanders pocket Namugongo allowances

Basajjabalaba’s KIU Ishaka on spot for detaining patient, carer

Kampala International Hospital (KIU) Teaching hospital has been accused of detaining a mentally-sick patient and a caregiver over unpaid bills worth shs600,000. According to the relatives of Barbara Nayebare, 25, who is mentally disturbed, she has been detained at hospital with minimal improvement. "At first we agreed that we pay shs500,000 and leave the patient at KIU. We paid shs300,000 and remained with balance of shs200,000," a brother of Nayebare said. Police officer forges case against businessman to steal land

KAMPALA. In a shocking case of alleged police misconduct, a law enforcement officer has been charged with destroying evidence and obstructing justice. Detective Sergeant Ngabirano Protasi, attached to Nsangi Police Station, was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate's Court in Makindye on Friday. According to the charges, Sgt. Ngabirano allegedly conspired with others to falsely implicate Richard Sewanonda in an aggravated robbery case. The motive behind this alleged forgery was to steal Sewanonda's contested land. Investigations by the State House Anti Corruption Unit headed by Brig Henry Isolde, revealed that in January 2025, Ngabirano purportedly removed a key witness statement from an official police file at Katwe Police Station and substituted it with a statement implicating Sewanonda.
