Busia Officials Remanded Over Grant Fraud

BUSIA. After months of community engagement and public forums in Busia Municipality, several district officials have been arraigned before the Busia Chief Magistrates Court on charges of theft and conspiracy to defraud the government. The charges stem from alleged irregularities in the handling of a UGX 1 billion road maintenance grant. The operation, led by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), followed multiple complaints raised by residents concerning poor road works and suspected financial misuse. Busia LC5 Chairperson Charged with Theft of UGX 30m Vehicle Parts

BUSIA. Busia District LC5 Chairperson Stephen Mugeni Wasike has been charged with alleged stealing motor vehicle parts valued at approximately UGX 30 million. He appeared before the Busia Chief Magistrate Court on May 2, 2025, and was remanded until May 8, 2025. According to the charge sheet, Wasike allegedly stole an engine and gearbox from a Toyota Hilux double cabin pickup truck, registration number UAK 827Z, belonging to the Busia District Local Government. The incident occurred on March 8, 2025, at the district's parking yard. The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Directorate and Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, investigated and arraigned Wasike in court.
