Arua PDM boss remanded over extortion

KAMPALA: A chairperson of the Parish Development Model in Arua City has been charged with extortion through selling of fake copies of PDM constitution. The Anti-Corruption Unit of State House together with police investigators arrested and arraigned Edoni Bernard, the Chairperson PDM of Pangisa ward in Arua City on allegations of extortion. It is alleged Edoni sold fake copies of the PDM Constitution to the 50 groups of associations under Pangisa ward. In July 2023, Edoni and others still at large, at Ojulua Cell in Arua City convened a meeting with the 50 PDM associations in Pangisa Ward in Arua City and demanded each group to pay sh15,000 allegedly for the purchase of PDM constitutions. Chief magistrate, prosecutor granted bail in corruption case

KAMPALA: The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has granted bail to Mitooma Chief Magistrate Sylvia Nvanungi and Ssembabule State Attorney Jacqueline Bako who are facing charges of corruption, URN reports. The duo spent Wednesday night in Luzira prison after being charged and remanded on eight counts of corruption. Bako appeared on all cases while Nvanungi faces one count which she allegedly committed when she was deployed in Sembabule as a Chief Magistrate. Pearl of Africa Hotel closed, to be auctioned after Aya loses again in court

BY URN Aya Investment Limited, which owns Pearl of Africa Hotel Kampala has again lost a bid to stay the execution of an order to auction the hotel for non-payment of loans amounting to over US$ 300 million. Three Court of Appeal judges; Fredrick Egonda-Ntende, Monica Mugenyi, and Oscar Kihika ruled that a reference filed by Aya against his financiers Industrial Development Corporation Of South Africa Limited to stay the orders of the Court of Appeal judge Christopher Gashirabake allowing the execution orders became untanable when Aya withdrew the substantive appeal on, which the stay of execution application was based. “We therefore find that following the withdrawal of Miscellaneous Application No. 271 of 2023, the application upon which the single judge decision referred to this Court was premised, this Reference is misconceived and improperly before this Court. We would therefore dismiss this Reference with costs to the Respondent,” the judges ruled.
