Uganda landfill collapse leaves several dead

A landfill collapsed in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, killing eight people including two children, authorities said on Saturday. Heavy rainfall caused the collapse of the landfill late on Friday. Known as Kiteezi, the landfill has served as Kampala's only garbage dump for decades, turning gradually into a big hill of garbage. "On a very sad note eight people have so far been found dead, six adults and two children," the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Chinese tour company named in aiding illegal gold mining in western Uganda

A Chinese company, Nanjing Tour and Travel, has been cited in aiding illegal exploitation of gold in western Uganda. This publication can exclusively reveal that the company's vehicles which camouflage as tourist vans carry Chinese individuals into some parts of Ibanda and Kiruhura districts where they carry out artisanal mining without government approval and licences. In Ibanda, the hooded Chinese were spotted at one of the mining area with the Chinese tourism company vehicle parked near a swamp.
