Security personnel protest as commanders pocket Namugongo allowances

“Everyone who spent nights in the cold at Namugongo is not happy with Mzee (Commandant Military) for carrying away their allowances.” These were words from a source in the Military police circles in reference to reports that a section of soldiers and police were not happy after working tirelessly during the Martyr’s Day celebrations. Word has it that whereas other sister security forces personnel such as ISO, CMI, regular forces and Prisons were paid their per diem as is always the case every year, the military police officers did not receive a penny despite deploying heavily at both shrines in Namugongo as well as Munyonyo where an explosion occurred. “He (Commandant) went, signed for the money and took off with it. The boys are not happy at all with that Mzee,” the source added. Earlier, an anonymous police officer sent […]

Controversial UPDF Bill Sparks Legal Uproar

Kampala-Uganda. The recent passage of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by Parliament has sparked widespread backlash from legal professionals, opposition leaders, and human rights advocates. The proposed law, which is now awaiting presidential assent, has been heavily criticized for undermining constitutional principles, due process, and human rights—particularly in relation to the continued trial of civilians in military courts. Critics argue that the legislature missed a crucial chance to address long-standing flaws in the military justice system. They contend that instead of reforming problematic provisions, the Bill reinforces practices that are inconsistent with Uganda’s constitutional framework. Alice Alaso, the acting national coordinator for the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) and a former Member of Parliament, denounced the Bill as being imposed on the public without proper consultation. “This law is an affront to constitutionalism and an open attack […]

Is Gen Muhoozi’s Behaviour and Posts Cultivating Genocide?

By James Kabengwa In recent weeks, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba—Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni—has used social media not only to escalate political tensions, but to openly mock the abduction and alleged torture of opposition bodyguard Eddie Mutwe. What may appear to some as flippant or provocative tweets are, in truth, deeply disturbing signals of state impunity, tribal dominance, and a creeping culture of dehumanization—warning signs eerily familiar to any student of genocidal regimes. When Muhoozi tweeted, “He is in my basement. Learning Runyankore. You are next!” he didn’t just admit to extrajudicial detention—he invoked a colonial-style conversion ritual, where the captive must absorb the language and culture of his oppressor. The statement drew immediate alarm, and rightly so. Forcing Eddie Mutwe, a Muganda and a bodyguard to Robert Kyagulanyi SSentamu aka Bobi Wine, the National […]
