Tourism bosses, UPDF clash over ADF announcements

Key players in the tourism industry have expressed over the recent announcement by the military about the infiltration of ADF rebels into the country. The tourism officials say the communication by the army was bad for business as it kept foreign travellers away from the country. The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has thus requested for Shs5b to engage international media in order to counter the threat posed to Uganda's tourism sector, following the pronouncement by UPDF that the ADF rebels had infiltrated into Uganda, with an intention to carry out revenge attacks. UTB said that tourists have already started cancelling their bookings following these reports. Early this week, the army said a number of top ADF commanders had crossed into the country with intentions of attacking various places. Last year, ADF rebels killed two tourists and a driver in Queen […]

Uganda’s Somalia adventure

BY ANDREW MWENDA On May 26, 2023, Al Shabab attacked a UPDF base in Somalia with devastating effects. UPDF said 54 soldiers were killed while Al Shaba claimed to have killed 137. I had grown wary of our mission and sought to understand the experience of similar missions elsewhere. That is how I came to read The Afghanistan Papers, an insightful book by Craig Whitlock. Whitlock’s book found me thinking about how futile UPDF’s mission in Somalia is. I have visited Somalia thrice and been impressed by the performance of our troops. In 2012, UPDF mounted a campaign to kick Al Shabab out of Mogadishu. It was the most ferocious campaign it ever fought. Al Shabab contested every inch of ground. Like the battle of Stalingrad, UPDF had to fight for every street, every block, every floor of every block […]

The attack was devastating because it was a clear target and the reconnaissance plane, was monitoring from the air. Congratulations to our Air-Force and the SDR that locates these criminals,” he added. The president said the army was pursuing a group of rebels which killed four people in two separate attacks. “Meanwhile, the group […]

Ugandan military fighter jets hit three ADF targets in Congo

KAMPALA: Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni has said the country's military fighter jets hit three targets of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A press statement from State House on Thursday said the air ride by the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) bombers was carried out on Wednesday. "Our fighter- bombers paid another visit to the terrorists, quite some distance inside Congo, in the Mambasa territory area. They attacked three targets, 180km, 184km and 200km, respectively, from the border on the Ntoroko side," Museveni said in the statement. The president congratulated the joint forces of UPDF and the Congolese army for protecting the population against the terrorists. They [terrorists] have been inviting us to pay attention to them by killing Ugandans and we are now responding to the invitation. The attacks are invariably […]
